Somehow, Emily had returned to the Land of the Dead after the wedding fiasco in the Land of the Living instead of moving on to the next life. The only part of her that wasn't still in one piece was her broken heart. This was the second failure the poor Corpse Bride had had when it came to men, and frankly, she couldn't take it any more. So, she did the only thing that made sense at the time: she holed herself up in Coffin Alley at her beloved rotting piano and cried. Even the Maggot and Black Widow couldn't stop her tears-- though it wasn't for lack of trying. "He can't have been the one," the Maggot snapped. "What kind of true love goes off with another woman without a care in the world?" "He was going to kill himself," Emily sobbed. "For me." "But, dearie, the maggot's right, that could be why you're still here," the Black Widow said running a leg through the mass of long blue hair that lay next to Emily's head (those of you with long hair, you know what happens when you lay your head to the side? THat's what's going on there, Emily's hair is still attached!) . "It is possible." Emily knew they were probably right, but she wasn't ready to face it. "Just-- just leave me alone." And so they had. Here she sat, days later, still grieving her lost love. "I know that I am dead," she whispered, halfheartedly playing the notes on the piano as she sang them, "yet it seems that I still have some tears to shed." She didn't even notice the footsteps coming down the dark alley. "Hey." Emily jumped and looked up into the single eye of the coolest cat in the Underworld: Bonejangles. "We haven't seen ya in days, doll," he said gently, looking at her tear ravaged face and sitting down beside her on the piano bench. "Somethin' wrong?" Befor he even asked, Bonejangles knew something was, in fact, very wrong. Her tears had carved dents into her rotting flesh like a river carves canyons in the Earth, and her veil and bouquet (both missing a good number of flowers) were tossed carelessly on the ground at her feet. She wasn't the jubiliciously lovely Corpse Bride he knew, but a miserable, heartbroken Corpse Bride. Seeing her like this made the skeleton want to cry along with her, but, being a man, he didn't (You know you agree with me, girls). He just looked sympathetically into her eyes. "What isn't?" moaned Emily. "All I ever wanted is to find my true love! This is the second one who's--who's left me. Barkis broke my heart in the first place,"-- here she choked on a sob-- "And then Victor crushed it and gave me back just a pile of dust! I can't take this any more!" And here, her tears overpowered her once again and she could speak no longer. "It's all right," whispered Bonejangles, running his skeletal fingers through her tangled blue hair. "I know it's hard." "You have no idea," Emily sniffed. "Actually, babe," said Bonejangles softly, "I do." Emily turned a tearstained face to Bonejangles who, she thought, looked as sad as she was, though it was hard to know for sure; it's hard to read an expression when there's no skin left to form one. Bonejangles mentally kicked himself for bringing up this excruciatingly painful memory. He hated remembering what... she had done to him so long ago, and now he had just set himself up to have to tell Emily the story. He sighed and moved closer to Emily. "It was a long time ago. I mean, before I kicked the bucket. I was seein' this gal... Anna, her name was, and she was a beaut... anyway, I had to leave town to go to a gig with the boys. I was a jazz singer when I was alive, too, ya know. Well, when I came back, there was Anna... with another man. I never saw her again after that." Emily was stunned. Okay, maybe he did understand. "I never knew," she said softly. "It's cool," said Bonejangles without looking at her. "I just-- I just wish my true love would hurry up and find me. Most men wouldn't put a ring on my finger and marry me accidentally, like-- like--" Emily let out another soft sob, and Bonejangles put his arm around her. "Victor did?" he guessed quietly. "Mm-hm," Emily murmured, laying her head against Bonejangles's ribs. "You know what?" Bonejangles whispered in her ear, brushing her hair behind it. "Maybe Victor wasn't really your true love." Emily picked her head up, listening. "Maybe the right guy's been waitin' here all along under your pretty little nose." Emily picked up on the hint, and, to Bonejangles's surprise and delight, she actually laughed. "Maybe." And, at that moment, all her sorrows about Victor Van Dort melted away like an ice cube in a volcano. He really didn't have much of a personality, and he was afraid of everything. Hadn't he even been afraid of her at first? But Bonejangles-- there was a man with character, passion, wit, charm... and best of all, he knew what it was to have his heart broken. She knew it as she wrapped her arms around the skeleton's ribcage: he was the one she'd been waiting for. As Emily and Bonejangles lost themselves in each other's embrace, she realized that Bonejangles was her true love.
There now, wasn't that worth the wait? *eyes Victor fangirls with pitchforks* I didn't mean any of that I said about him! It just came out that way and worked with the BJ/E feel! I think Victor's really cool, and one of my favorite characters in the movie! DON'T HURT ME!!!

I did like it. Quite a bit. It does look nice as a standalone, but if there are chapters going to be coming up, it would be great to see it. ^-^

Sorry guys, it's a one-shot. I'm glad you like it, though!
But I have some good news! I'm working on a fic all about Bonejangles- his life, his death, and some other stuff! Something for my fellow fangirls to look forward to!
